Removal of encroachers from archaeological site ordered

SUKKUR: The Sukkur bench of the Sindh High Court on Wednesday ordered removal of encroachments and ejection of landgrabbers from the archeological site of Lakhin-JoDaro and directed the department concerned to look after the historic site.
The division bench comprising Justices Zulfiqar Ahmed Khan and Syed Yousuf Ali passed the order while hearing a petition filed by ajournalist, Mohib Chandio, against the occupation of land in the LakhinJo-Daro.
The petitioner`s counsel advocate Sohail Khoso told the court that influential land-grabbers had illegally occupied 14 acres of land in the archeological site located in SITE area. The land-grabbers had also damaged the site, he said.
The district administration and other authorities concerned were not ready to take any action against the encroachers since they enjoyed the support of influentialpolitical personalities of Sukkur, he said.
After hearing out the petitioner`s counsel, the judge expressed anger over the officials of archeology department who had attended the hearing and ordered them to remove all illegal encroachments from the archeological site and immediately cancel allotments of land that fell within the archeological site.
The court disposed of the petition after ordering the archeological department to look after the LakhinJo-Daro site.
