Caucus discusses women`s issues

By A Reporter 2014-10-28
LAHORE: The Punjab Assembly Women`s Caucus was held on Monday at the Assembly Hall.

MPA Tehseen Fawwad from Rawalpindi submitted a report of a woman allegedly burnt alive by her inlaws. She said the police initially did not register the first information report (FIR). On her intervention, they did file one without any arrest.

The caucus decided a woman superintendent of police (SP) be included in such affairs and that the SP be present at caucus meetings so that both sides could be in touch with each other and the police at high level could pressure their subordinates to file important FIRs concerning women.

MPA Gulnaz Shehzadi from Gujrat submitted a report on the removal of a superintendent from a women`s shelter home for corruption.

Caucus Convener Azma Bukhari said police did not usually cooperate in cases which went against women. The caucus adopted two resolutions. They praised Noble prize winner Malala Yousufzai and Pakistani women`s cricket team for winning the Asia Game medal. The resolution meant to create more opportunities for Pakistani women and give their efforts accolade.

The other resolution was for the Kashmiri women, and in accordance with Kashmir Black Day, the caucus stood in solidarity with them.

Caucus members said the Women`s Day Package though passed by the assembly, was not being implemented, and it was the responsibility of Punjab Women`s Development Minister Hameeda Waheeduddin to get it enforced.

`The caucus is not an executive body therefore it can only try and push something forward,` Ms Bukhari said.

She also said some positive response might be expected on Tuesday concerning the Child Marriage Bill which seemed to have been sidelined by the assembly for one year.
