GB to raise force to man border with KP

GILGIT: The Gilgit-Baltistan security establishment has decided to raise a force to be deployed at the region`s border with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to keep watch over the movement of suspected persons.

The GB government in this regard has allocated Rs32 million for purchasing drone cameras and setting up a security force to man the border with KP mostly at mountainous areas.

An official of GB police on condition of anonymity told Dawn on Friday that as GB shared long border with KP and suspected persons sneaked through each other`s territory without any hindrance foolproof manning of the boundary was a must.

The police official said a security force comprising local volunteers would be raised to deploy at 48 police checkposts at areas in Gilgit, Ghizer and Hunza districts. The recruitment for the force would stan form first month of next year, he maintained.

The deployed forces would be provided drone cameras to monitor suspected people`s movements across the border, and take urgent actions.

The official said there had been complaints that the police personnel deployed at the border were not performing their duties, adding the purpose of flying drone cameras was also to monitor the attendance and performance of the police personnel.

He said the regional police had prepared recommendations in this regard after consultations with other law enforcement and intelligence agencies. He said the GB government in light of the recommendations had approved Rs32 million for the purpose initially.-Correspondent
