Traders threaten protest against heavy fines

KOHAT: Traders here have threatened a sit-in and closure of bazaars in protest against heavy fines imposed on them for encroachments, unhygienic fast food, juice shops and bakeries by the district administration.

In this regard, a meeting of the bazaar unions was held at Kotwali Mosque which was attended by the local shopkeepers and businessmen. Tajir Action Committee president Haji Abid said that the assistant commissioner and deputy commissioner had no right to check hotels, encroachments, restaurants and fast food shops.

They claimed that a few days ago a hotel owner was fined Rs100,000 for selling `Karahi Ghost` on meatless day and another one Rs20,000. They said that it was the job of food department and the tehsil municipal administration to take action against restaurants and encroachments, respectively.

They said that if the oper-ations by the district administration were not stopped they would shut the bazaars and observe a sit-in protest.

The assistant commissioner has uned scores of shopkeepers in the main Kohat bazaar, KDA Town, Bannu Bazaar, Charsi Bazaar, Mustafa Bazaar and in markets located on the University Road, Hangu Road and Bannu Road.

Meanwhile, the social and political circles welcomed the drive against encroachments and unhygienic foods. They said that the motorists and pedestrians faced immense difficulty in bazaars due encroachments.

KILLED: A young man was killed on Friday by his relatives who were not happy over his engagement with a girl outside the family, police said.

DSP Rokhan Khan said that one Ali Gul, who had come f rom Dubai three days ago for his marriage, was coming from KDA Town on motorcycle when armed men opened fire on him near the OTS Road. He died on the spot.

Hijab Gul told the cantonment police that some relatives were not happy over the engagement of his brother Ali Gul. He nominated Shiraz Khan, Shehzad Khan, Saleem Khan and Samiullah in the FIR. The police have started investigation.
