WATER pollution in Rawalpindi is increasing at an alarming rate. A Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources study conducted in May 2014 reveals that 87 per cent of water in Rawalpindi is not fit for drinking because of bacterial and viral contamination. Moreover, poisonous chemicals, domestic waste and heaps of uncollected garbage everywhere is further contaminating the water.
Hepatitis, dysentery and typhoid are becoming very common owing to water contamination. In addition dengue fever, a diseasefastspreadinginPakistan,also has its origin in ponds of stagnant water. Hence this issue requires serious attention.
The solution to this problem lies in educating and creating awareness among the masses about the issue.
