NOWADAYS, I am overtaken by euphoria generated by a flurry of good news. A few days ago, it was the governor of the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) announcing that the government had decided to abolish 150,000 vacant posts. And then came the decision to install electric charging stations with electricity at subsidised rates for electric vehicles. The latter decision particularly is a cause of jubilation. I was so thrilled that I decided to sell my petrol-run car and replace it with an electric car. It was then I realised that the difference between the two ran into millions of rupees.
I do not understand for whose benefit these charging stations are being installed, and who is advising our higher-ups to undertake such nutty ventures, because those who can afford to keep electric cars do not need cheap electricity. It is as simple as that. It is just another act of facilitating the country`s elite.
