Misplaced priorities

GOVERNMENTS in Pakistan, both federal and provincial, are known for their misplaced priorities. The provincial governor in Sindh recently ordered a 40-minute display of fireworks to usher in the new year in Karachi. While celebrations are important, this extravagant display came at a time when the city is grappling with far more pressing issues. Leaving all such issues aside, public resources were allocated to an event that contributed to air pollution and wasteful spending.
Karachi, already facing severe air quality problems, does not need additional pollutants in the form of fireworks.
The smoke and chemicals released into the air not only harmed the environment, but also put the health of the people, particularly those suffering from respiratory conditions, at a heightened risk.
In a city plagued by a lack of green spaces, traffic congestion and insufficient public amenities, a firework display was an act of misplaced indulgence. Instead of spending millions on fireworks, the governor should have used the funds for more meaningful initiatives.
A plantation drive to combat the city`s environmental challenges, or the distribution of warm blankets to the underprivileged living on the streets would have been a far more beneficial use of the resources.
Such acts of charity and social responsibility would have a lasting, positive impact on the lives of those who need it the most. Together, let us work towards positive change, sustainability and compassion for the less fortunate.
