Court moved for Sindh-like NAP enforcement

By Our Staff Reporter 2016-03-29
LAHORE: The Lahore High Court has been requested to order implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) in Punjab like Rangers did in Sindh.

Judicial Activism Panel Chairman Azhar Siddique and Civil Society Network President Abdullah Malik made the request in a writ petition filed on Monday in the wake of suicide attack at Gulshan-i-Iqbal Park.

The petitioners say the PML-N-led Punjab government did not formulate any effective mechanism against terrorist activities. They state that it is inevitable to say that the incumbent federal and Punjab governments have totally failed to provide a secure environment leading to right to living and right to liberty. They say NAP hasbeen formulated by military establishment and other lawenforcement agencies and af ter its formulation a visible shift has been observed and the wave of terrorism, if not eradicated completely, declined at least. The law and order situation in Karachi is the prime example in this regard, they say.

The petitioners allege the ruling PML-N is reluctant to execute NAP in letter and spirit as it does not want to lose its vote bank which directly or indirectly is connected with the operation of Rangers in Punjab.

The petitioners ask the court to order implementation of the NAP in Punjab as law-enforcement agencies, including police, have miserably failed to protect the lives of citizens in the province. Justice Shahid Waheed will take up the petition on Tuesday (today).
