Two arrested for harassing varsity girls, injuring van driver

NAROWAL: Sialkot police on Friday arrested two of the five suspects booked for harassing the Govt College Girls University Sialkot and injuring their van driver near Islam Central Hospital on the Sialkot-Pasrur Road.

Shahid Mahmood advocate, a resident of Chak Laury of tehsil Pasrur, had registered a complaint with the police that his niece (A) was a student of the university and would commute to her university with other girl students of Pasrur in van.

According to the first information report, his niece called him and told him that she was returning from the university in the private van as per the routine when five armed youths on three motorcycles started chasing it. Unidentified gunmen repeatedly threatened the van driver, Afzal, asking him to stop the van, spreading fear among the girls who started screaming. Unidentified motorcyclists forcibly stopped the van near Islam Central Hospital on Sialkot Pasrur Road and tortured the van driver.

They hit him in the head with an iron rod while using foul language against him and broke windows of the van while waving weapons. The suspects fled on the spot, threatening the students when locals gathered there.

Sialkot Saddar police have registered a case against five unidentified suspects under Section 506-II/509 (intimidation and sexual harassment), Section 440 (mischief, causing injuries) and Section 148/149 (rioting and unlawful assembly). The footage of the incident went viral on social media.

Sialkot District Police Officer (DPO) Faisal Shahzad also took immediate notice of the incident and formed a raiding team, headed by the Sialkot DSP, for identification and arrest of the suspects. The police investigation team traced two of the suspects, Hamza and Tayyab, with the help of the footage on social media as well as human intelligence.

Saddar Station House Officer Mian Abdul Razzaq led the team that arrested the suspects.

ACCIDENT: A speeding motorcycle collided with a mini-truck in Sheikhupura, killing two persons in the accident.

The Rescue 1122 spokesman said a phone call was received from the Froze Vitan Stop on the Faisalabad Road. According to the caller, the mini-truck was taking a U-turn when a speeding motorcycle hit it. The rescue team reached the site immediately but two persons had died on impact.

The rescue spokesman identified the deceased as 26-year-old Sharafat Maqsood and 22-year-old Mana Ashiq.
