GB bans 11 religious groups

GILGIT: The GilgitBaltistan home department on Tuesday imposed ban on activities of 11 religious and militant organisations.

According a handout issued here, the home department has directed the law enforcement agencies and administrations of all the seven districts of the region to keep an eye on activities of the banned organisations, and take action against them.

The banned outfits include Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan, Shia Tulba Action Committee, Markazi Sabeel Organization Gilgit, Tanzeem-i-Nojwanan Ahle Sunnat, Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Anjuman-iImamia Gilgit-Baltistan, Muslim Students Organisation, Tanzeem-i-Ahle Sunnat Wal Jamaat, Tehreek1-Jafaria Pakistan, Tehreek-iIslami and Khana Hikmat.

The home department also requested the print and electronic media outlets to avoid giving coverage to these organisations and discourage any cooperation with the outfits to maintain peace in the region.

PAPERS SUBMITTED: As many as 506 candidates, including nine female aspirants, filed nomination for 24 seats of Gilgit-Baltistan Legislative Assembly on the last day of filing papers.

The GBLA elections are scheduled to be held on June 8.

According to the Election Commission, the highest number of candidates -108, including a woman filed papers for six seats from Skardu district. Similarly, 104 candidates, including three women, filed nominations for three seats from Gilgit; 32, including three women, submitted papers for three seats from Ghanche; 75 candidates filed papers for four seats in Diamer; 51 male and a woman submitted nominations for two seats from Astore; 66 candidates, including a woman, filed nominations for three seats from Ghizer; and 69 candidates filed papers for three seats from Hunza-Nagar.
