Delimitation: some of Gujrat`s rural areas included in MC

GUJRAT: Parts of some rural areas surrounding the city have been included in the Gujrat municipal corporation (MC) while the areas surrounding the six municipal committees of the district -Jalalpur Jattan, Kunjah, Lalamusa, Dinga, Kharian and Sara-i-Alamgir -will also be included in the delimitation plan being devised by the district election commission.
Delimitation of rural areas has been under way. The total number of rural union councils is said to be 117 with 58 in Gujrat tehsil, 48 Kharian and 11 Sara-i-Alamgir tehsils. Urban areas of these tehsils were divided among the municipal corporation and six municipal committees Official sources told Dawn the local election commission had expedited homework for finalising the delimitation process before display-ing the final lists by May 15 and a draft comprising proposals of delimitation had also been worked out.
However, details had not been disclosed even to officials of the district government since the district election commission as per directions of the superior court had solely been working on the subject.
The Gujrat municipal corporation will be comprising of 12 urban union councils, and some parts of rural areas surrounding the city such as Gurali, Gurala, Kalara Punawan, Uddowal, Aadowal, Narowali, Hariyawala, Lundpur, Jamna, Madina Syedan and Phulerwan have been included in the limits of the municipal corporation as per an earlier notification by the Punjab government.
However, entire areas of the aforementioned revenue estates had not been made part of the corporation as other areas of these villages will be made part of rural union councils.Municipalcommitteesof Lalamusa and Jalalpur Jattan towns comprise 24 wards each whereas Dinga and Sara-i-Alamgir 12 each; municipal committees of Kunjah and Kharian towns will comprise 11 wards each.
Reliable sources told Dawn that the district election commission had almost completed the proposed plan of the Gujrat municipal corporation as well as for the rural union councils.
However, work was still in progress for delimitation of wards of the six municipal committees.
Staff of the district land revenue department was assisting officials of the election commission in preparing for the delimitation.
Assistant commissioners of the tehsils concerned had been made assistant delimitation officers whereas District Election Commissioner Majid Sharif Dogar has been appointed the district delimitation of ficer.
