DERA GHAZI KHAN: Employees of the water management project from four districts of Dera Ghazi Khan division on Tuesday set up a hunger strike camp under the banner of the Water Management Employees Union.
The workers demanded their jobs be regularised that had already been promised and example of their fellow workers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Sindh, Balochistan and Gilgit-Baltistan be followed.
The camp was established at Traffic Chowk by workers from Dera Ghazi Khan, Layyah, Rajanpur and Muzaffargarh districts.
The demonstratorsshouted slogans against the government for not fulfilling its promise to include contractual employees in the permanent cadre.
Union divisional president Wahid Bukhsh Quraishi told Dawn the employees had been protesting against injustice since April 9 and they observed a hunger strike in demand for regularisation of their jobs.
He further claimed the finance department had issued notifications for the purpose. He also said the employees would continue their strike till the issuance of notifications. He claimed that except Punjab, all provinces and administrative units had regularised contractual employees of their respective water management projects.
