Pedestrian access

2025-05-29
THE recent infrastructure development in Islamabad, particularly the construction of new overpasses and underpasses, has severely restricted pedestrian mobility.

The Fatima Jinnah Park has become nearly inaccessible to those coming from G-9 and G-8 sectors due to the newly-built overpass on Jinnah Avenue.

Similarly, the removal of the F-10 roundabout at Jinnah Avenue has made access to F-10 Markaz and F-9 Park from G-9, G-10, G-11 sectors and surrounding areas extremely difficult. The plight of people with physical disabilities is the worst. Previously, these areas had pedestrian-friendly pathways that ensured easy and safe movement, but the new developments have entirely neglected their needs.

Moreover, pedestrians accessing F-9 Park from F-10 sector must now cross a two-way road with fast-moving traffic, putting their lives at a considerable risk.

The absence of pedestrian crossings or proper safety measures further exacerbates the problem.

It appears that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) has overlooked the fundamental needs of pedestrians. I have personally witnessed the difficulties people face in accessing F-9 Park and F-10 Markaz. If these projects had been properly evaluated, at the very least, zebra crossings and footpaths previously available would have been retained.

In a city where public transport is inadequate, inflation is high, and private vehicles are unaffordable for many, pedestrian accessibility must be a priority.

The CDA should reassess its sense of development, and take immediate steps to restore pedestrian-friendly infrastructure.
