BAJAUR/LAKKI MARWAT: Police repulsed an attack by terrorists on Thangi checkpost in Bajaur tribal district on Sunday night, officials said on Monday.

They told Dawn that terrorists attacked the joint police and FC post in Thangi area of Salarzai tehsil on Sunday night around 9:42 pm. They said that police and security forces personnel at the post responded effectively to the attack.

They said that no casualtieswere reported in the attack. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Police on Monday started checking of suspicious vehicles and suspected people to thwart terrorist activities in the district.

Several police officials took part in the exercise, searching vehicles and people on roads and exit and entry points, said a statement.

It urged people to cooperate with police to maintain law and order in the district. It said that the campaign would continue for an indefinite period.

In Bannu, police foiled a bid of terrorists to plant an improvised explosive device in Nurar area of on Monday.

DPO Saleem Abbas Kulachi said that terrorists had come tothe rural area for a subversive act.

`They were busy planting an IED along the roadside when police learnt about their malicious design,` he said. He added that a police contingent along with security forces immediately reached there and cordoned off the area.

He said that law enforcers targeted terrorists with the help of a drone to prevent them from executing their task. `As a result of drone strike, terrorists suffered casualties,` the DPO claimed. He said that police were fully alert to deal with any kind of threat.

He said that all resources were being utilised to protect lives and properties of people.

It is pertinent to mention here that presence of armed groups of Fitna-al-Khawarij spread a waveof fear and unrest in Nurar area of Bannu a day earlier.

The area is located in the limits of Miryan police station, which has been targeted by terrorist through quadcopters several times during the last over one month.

Bannu DPO Saleem Abbas Kulachi had said that the presence of 200 to 250 terrorists had been noticed in the limits of Miryan police station. He said that terrorists always used civilians, especially children, as human shield so police could not engage them.

Meanwhile, police claimed to have flushed out terrorists from Koh-i-Maidan area in Karak, bordering Lakki Marwat and Mianwali districts.
