LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf`s campaign to mobilise popular support for its Sept 30 anti-graft rally close to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif`s Jati Umra home gained momentum with Imran Khan making a whirlwind tour of the city and addressingsmallgatheringsonWednesday.
The Raiwind rally is part of the PTI drive to force the prime minister and his family to explain their links with several offshore companies and properties as revealed in the Panamagate.
PTI chairman Imran Khan urged everyone to join him in his march on Raiwind against corruption. The Panamaleaks, he said, does not put blame on Nawaz Sharif but gives proof of his massive corruption. `The nation is supposed totell the PML-N rulers that it is demanding justice in the wake of the Panamagate scandal,` he said.
Mr Khan also released an audio message in his own voice on social media asking people to join him on Sept 30.
The PTI workers have painted the city red and green with party Hags, pananexes, banners and hoardings asl(ing the masses to reach Raiwind. They have also set up camps at major city crossings playing party songs and installed searchlights to keep the party going till late in the night.
Charged party workers, who were dancing to the tunes of party songs, told this reporter that they would not let the rulers go scot-free and recover the looted national wealth at all cost. At Liberty roundabout, a party worker, Nadeem said the institutions which are supposed to dispense justice are afraid ofperforming their duties and the PTI would encourage and motivate them to perform their duties in a judicious manner.
Banners and hoardings read: `Pakistan are you ready against corruption`, `Corruption sey chhutkara Imran Khan ney pukara`, `Chalo Chalo Raiwind Chalo` etc.
Imran Khan on Wednesday paid a whirlwind visit to the city streets and made brief speeches at party camps at Sabzi Mandi, Bhatti Chowk, Nasser Bagh, Babu Sabu, Ichhra, Ghaas Mandi, Mughalpura, Ghazi Chowk, Liberty Market, Wapda Town roundabout and other areas.
As farmers are already protesting on city roads, Mr Khan asked them to join him in the Raiwind march and he would raise their issue and point of view as well.
Asking the Election Commission of Pakistan to decide the pending cases, Mr Khan warned that hewould also give another date (for protest), if it would give date again.
Mr Khan also asked Interior Minister Nisar Ali Khan in a sarcastie tone that he should ensure protection of the Supreme Court because the baton-wielding force of the PML-N might attack it again in the wake of `threat` to Nawaz Sharif.
While the PTI caravans have started moving from Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, south and north Punjab, Balochistan, Azad Kashmir and other parts of the country for Raiwind to participate in party`s `accountability movement`, the public gathering organisers are focusing on preparations at Adda Plot on Raiwind Road, the venue for the big show, and dispatched the paraphernalia and a shipping container.
The district administration, which formally gave approval for holding the show, paid several vis-its at the venue to make security arrangements in the wake of terrorism threat alerts given by the federal agencies.
Opposition Leader in Punjab Assembly Mian Mahmoodur Rasheed, along with MPAs, met Chief Secretary Zahid Saeed asking him to ensure security arrangements around party`s public meeting at Adda Plot.
The chief secretary assured the delegation that `the government would ensure law and order on and before the day of your `jalsa` in every sense of the term`. The Lahore administration and police had held meetings with the organisers in a cordial environment and assured a secure and irritant-free `jalsa` under a well-devised code of conduct. The PTI organisers also made security arrangements at the venue for the participants including women.
