Fight against rigging Woman candidate`s hope still alive

By Sadia Qasim Shah 2013-10-29
PESHAWAR, Oct 28: `I want to serve my people,` insists 80-year-old Hazrat Bibi while clutching her bundled documents and other belongings.

Though powerful candidates of political parties have accepted the election results, this aged woman is still fighting and reluctant to accept the election results of her constituency, PK-72, Bannu.

The results of the May 11 election in the PK-72 Bannu constituency show Shah Mohammad Khan, an independent candidate and now a PTI MPA, was on the top with 14,735 votes.

But Hazrat Bibi, who is among 22 contestants, has until today refused to accept the results.

The same list shows Hazrat Bibi had secured 114 votes only but she blames rigging for her defeat.

Dissatisfied with the election results and disappointed by the election tribunal, she bundled up her documents and began her journey all alone from Bannu towards Islamabad. She has pinned hopes to the Supreme Court where she wants to take her case for hearing.

Hazrat Bibi, wife of Mir Ghulam, twice remained councilor.

She strongly feels indebted to those in the village who voted for her and wants to serve them. She has two sons but without anyone`s company, all alone she was traveling to the capital in the hope of getting heard at the Supreme Court.

It is pertinent to note here that many women belonging to political and rich families who had not even remained politically active, without contesting elec-tion, have become members of the National and Provincial assemblies on reserved seats.

Women like Hazrat Bibi, having no money but only will to serve the people, have to fight a tough battle to win their place in the political system.

She hails from Barikzai union council of Bannu district. She contested the election as an independent contestant and alleges that she lost due to rigging and use of money to influence election results.

`I don`t have money and don`t know how to serve my people without money and power,` says Hazrat Bibi insisting she had spent Rs100,000 during the election.

`I got roads, schools and water tanks built in eight villages of Barikzai union council when I was a councilor,` she proudly made a mention of work she had done for the people of her area.

`If given an opportunity, I will again serve the people as an elected representative,` says the aged woman, who looks frail but her will to prove herself the rightful representative of the people seems unshaken.

The `iron lady` wants the Supreme Court to pay heed to her request so that she could prove her case.
