Quake damages 11schools

TAXILA: According to initial assessments made by the education department, 11 school buildings in tehsil Taxila have been damaged by the October 26 earthquake, sources told Dawn on Wednesday.

Among the schools, Government Primary School Thatta Khalil and Government Primary School Dhoke Zaindi are in dilapidated condition as cracks have appeared in their walls.

Despite the threat of aftershocks, the school administrations has not stopped academic activities, instead arranging classes in the open.

The sources said the provincial education department had asked education officers to examine the schools buildings in their administrative control and submit their reports immediately.

When contacted deputy district education officer male Abdul Khaliq said some of the schools` boundary walls had either collapsed or developed cracks.

He said that the students of the damaged class rooms had been adjusted in other class rooms.

He said that engineers of the district building department would examine the 11 school buildings.

When contacted Deputy District Education Officer Robina Rauf said a report on the damaged buildings had been submitted to local and district administration for their repair or reconstruction.

Responding to a question, she said dilapidated blocks of the school buildings had been sealed.
