By Azfar-ul-Ashfaque 2013-12-29
KARACHI: The Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the PML-N have decided to improve `working relationship` both at the centre and Sindh levels.

The decision was taken at a meeting held between a delegation of the MQM and Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan at the Governor`s House on Saturday.

The MQM delegation led by Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui discussed the overall political situation with the interior minister.

`We have met Chaudhry Nisar before and discussed several administrativeissues, but today`s meeting had a political agenda, said an MQM source.

The source said the MQM had assured the interior minister that it would support the PML-N government at the centre on every national issue despite the fact that its legislators sat on opposition benches in parliament.

While the MQM has been protesting against the PPP government in Sindh for adopting the controversial Sindh Local Government Act, 2013, the source said the issue did not come under discussion at the meeting. `We discussed how to move forward in Sindh, where the PML-N is also in opposition.

According to an MQM press release, the two sides agreed to work for the establishment of a permanent peace in Karachi.

The MQM delegation was comprised of party`s parliamentary leader inthe National Assembly Dr Farooq Sattar, Dr Saghir Ahmed, Kanwar Naveed Jameel and Senator Babar Ghori.

During their meeting, the governor and the interior minister discussed the overall security situation in the province.

A statement issued by the Governor`s House said that the performance of law-enforcement agencies was discussed in detail.

The two agreed that the ongoing targeted operation would be made more effective. They called upon people to help law-enforcers in identifying terrorists and criminals, the statement said.

The interior minister assured the governor of federal government`s full cooperation.

It was pointed out at the meeting that economic progress and development of the country depended on the improved law and order situation.
