PESHAWAR / MIRAMSHAH: A health official supervising an anti-polio campaign was killed and two members of his team, including a woman, were injured on Saturday when a gunman stormed the city`s Mattani Hospital and opened fire at them.
The injured paramedic, Ms Yaseen, said that health workers were busy administering vaccine to children when the unidentified man opened fire on them.
The deceased officer was identified as Zahir Shah, a resident of Azakhel.The other injured was identified as Niqab Khan, a ward orderly.
The injured were taken to Lady Reading Hospital. Ms Yaseen was discharged after treatment and the orderly was admitted.
A resident of the area, who helped shifting the injured to the hospital, said that two armed men came to the Mattani Hospital on foot. One of them stayed at the gate and the other went inside and attacked the health workers.
A source said that there was no security personnel deployed at the hospital. A few months ago, he added, police had foiled an attempt to blow up the hospital.
NEW POLIO CASES: Six new polio cases were detected in North Waziristan and South Waziristan on Saturday, officials said.
The National Institute of Health Islamabad tested six children positive for the poliomyelitis in a single day.
North Waziristan Agency has recorded the most cases of the crippling disease with 32 patients out of the nationwide tally of 83.
