LAKKI MARWAT: The district administration here has launched a special campaign to promote use of helmet by motorcyclists for their own safety.
As part of the drive, the administration officials distributed free helmets among the bike riders in Lakki city, Naurang and other towns of the district. The bike riders were also sensitised about the importance of wearing helmet for safety.
Awareness banners have also been displayed at filling stations and on city roads inscribed with the message `no helmet, no petrol`. The administration has also directed the owners of petrol pumps not to sell fuel to bike riders without helmets.
Lakki Marwat is among the districts where accidents involving motorcycles occur frequently and many young people have lost their lives in such mishaps.
`The drive to promote use of helmet is aimed at protecting lives of the people,` said deputy commissioner Jehangir Azam Wazir. He asked the people, especially youths, to wear helmet while riding a motorbike for their own safety.
Mr Wazir also directed owners of filling stations to avoid selling petrol to motorcyclists not wearing helmet. He said that those violating the orders would be fined. Area people have hailed the administration for initiating the campaign.
Meanwhile, garbage dumps were removed from Naurang city and adjacent localities on Saturday.
Naurang tehsil additional assistant commissioner Aminullah Khan supervised the campaign where the sanitation workers of tehsil municipal administration cleaned the city and removed garbage dumps from urban localities.
`The cleanliness campaign was launched on directives of the deputy commissioner to make the city clean,` said Aminullah Khan.
He said that the municipal authorities had been directed to carry out cleanliness activity on daily basis. `Provision of clean and healthy environment is the topmost priority of district administration and efforts will be made to keep the entire city free of pollution,` he added.
