Eliminating extremism

2015-01-30
THE Peshawar carnage teaches us to remain united until the cows come home. National Action Plan implementers need to take strategic initiatives to root out extremism and terrorism. They need to decide whether they like to eliminate terrorists/extremists or terrorism/extremism.After the brutal killings of school-going children, it is generally felt by parents that the government and law-enforcement entities need to develop a strategy to unearth the causes of extremism and terrorism.

However, layered poverty and injustice are the main contributors to give birth to extremism and terrorism in the country.

When people cross a bearable line of poverty and injustice in society, they may easily become part of terrorist organisations, work for the fifth column against national interests and may be willing to destabilise the country.

Sadly, we have several organisations that stand for the cause of peace, but they fail to understand problems related to the birth of extremism.

What they need to do at regional and national levels is to call for an agenda to curb the causes of terrorism and extremism to help the country grow peacefully and faster.

I hope eliminating the reasons behind extremism and terrorism will be welcomed by all potential parties, which must play their role more responsibly.
