LAHORE: A multinational food and beverage company on Wednesday inaugurated a biomass boiler in Kabirwala as part of its Rs2 billion renewable energy investment in Pakistan It is part of the company`s efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in line with its 2050 Net Zero commitments, as well as the Pakistan government`s UN climate change pledge.

Nestlé`s Head of Technical for Asia, Oceania and Africa Christian Schmid inaugurated the plant and said the biomass boiler not only provided sustainability but also created shared value for the people of Pakistan.

He said they werejointly taking significant strides towards a cleaner environment and more sustainable future.

The boiler will help the government achieve its Nationally Determined Contribution commitment to reach 60pc renewable energy by 2030. The boiler will reduce approximately 10,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions per year, which is equivalent to the emissions of 2,300 cars, and contribute to a 20pc reduction in GHG emissions.

Additionally, it will generate 80,000 tonnes of steam per year, accounting for 85pc of the renewable energy contribution to the factory`s total thermal energy needs, with anticipated fuel savings of approximately six million Nm3 of natural gas and 29 tonnes of heavy furnace oil annually.
