BOMBAY: At a specially convened meeting this afternoon [April 29], the Bombay Corporation passed a resolution calling upon the Government of India to appoint an independent tribunal to inquire into the origins of the explosion and fires of April 14, with a view to fixing responsibility.
The Municipal Commissioner, Mr. M.D. Bhatt revealed certain facts about the explosions. He said that a call was received at about 1-13 p.m. that a fire had broken out on a ship in the docks.
Six minutes later another message came which stated that the fire was of a serious nature. On reaching the site, the Fire Brigade learnt that cotton bales were on fire and that there was ammunition in one of the hatches. Water was spread on that part of the ship, and frantic but vain efforts were made to open these hatches. An attempt was then made to flood the whole ship by means of 36 hoses.
For a short time the fire seemed to be under control, but at 4-14 p.m. the flames spread so high that it was impossible for anybody to stay on board the ship. (Dawn, Delhi)
