Four killed, 11 injured as rain, windstorm batter KP

PESHAWAR: With rain and windstorm hitting several parts of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, four people were killed and 11 injured in related incidents on Thursday.

Two people lost lives and 10 suffered injuries in Mardan district, while two were killed and one injured due to lightning in Mohmand tribal district.

In a statement, Rescue 1122 said that a mother and her daughter lost lives in the Islamabad Killay area of Tahkhta Bhai when the roof of their house collapsed due to heavy rain.

Another girl in the same area was injured due to a wall collapse. Another person suffered injuries in Katlang.Two children were injured in Akhund Baba area, one in Bakhshali, three in Mangah and one in Rustam due to roof collapse incidents.

Two workers died and one was injured due to a lightning strike in Khangah Marble mine area of Tehsil Safi, Rescue 1122 officials said.

The workers were present in the mine at the time of the incident. The deceased were identified as Meena Gul and Rafiq of Khyber tribal district, while the injured was driver Jamil Khan from Bajaur tribal district who was shifted to a local hospital for treatment.

A medical team of Rescue 1122 immediately reached the scene for the care of the injured.

Heavy rains and hailstorm destroyed standing crops and vegetables in Safi and Amabr tehsils of the Mohmand tribal district.

The provincial capital was also hit by a windstorm of moderate intensity, resulting in prolonged power outages.A Pakistan Met Department official told Dawn that wind speed stood at 40 knots or 70-75km per hour.

He said that an active weather system was likely to persist in Peshawar, its surrounding areas and upper parts of the province for the next 24 hours, causing rains and windstorms.

Isolated places are likely to face the hailstorm during this period, according to him.

Also in the day, the provincial capital received traces of rain in the afternoon and evening.

Mohmand tribal district was also battered by heavy winds, lightning and heavy rains in isolated places across the district.

The Peshawar Electric Supply Company (Pesco) said that 149 of its feeders tripped due to the rain in Peshawar, Swat, Khyber, Abbottabad, Swabi and Mardan circles.

It said that its teams had restored power supply on 71 feeders, while 78 were remaining.Torrential rain accompanied by strong winds hit Swabi district. Three days ago, a thunderstorm destroyed crops and caused a power breakdown for around 28 hours.

During the windstorm, people remained indoors for their own safety.

As the rainfall started, power supply to all regions was suspended.

Pesco officials said soon after the rain stopped, they would assume work to restore power supply.

The Rescue 1122 urged people to take steps for their and children`s protection and said in case of any incident, they should immediately inform it for assistance as its workers were ready to deal with any eventuality.

`We are troubled by power suspension as once it is suspended in such weather, it isn`t restored subjecting people to sleepless nights,` said headmaster Anwar Zeb.

The Pesco officials said that they would work to restore thepower supply as soon as possible.

Heavy rain coupled with strong winds battered Bajaur tribal district, damaging veget able fields and uprooting trees.

According to residents, the rainfall and windstorm started across the district at around 5pm and lasted for quite some time.

They told Dawn that Khar, Mamund, Salarzai and Utmankhel were the worst affected areas where the calamity damaged vegetables and uprooted scores oftrees.

Residents said strong winds also damaged sheds of houses and shops in various areas of the district.

They added thatthe unusual windstorm damaged solar panelsinstalled on rooftops.

Strong winds disrupted business activities in most parts of the district, forcing most traders to close shops earlier than usual.

Moreover, the thunderstorms disrupted power supply to several areas.
