INSTEAD of natural gas flowing through the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) pipeline, the residents of Mansoor Nagar in Karachi`s Orangi Town area are getting water. Had it been potable water, the people might not be complaining, but that is not the case. The water oozing out of the gas pipeline has pungent odour.
This issue has persisted for the last several weeks, causing immense inconvenience to the residents. People are being forced to buy expensive LPG cylinders or use electric appliances, but that is beyond the financial means of the majority of area residents. Besides, what about the safety aspect? The SSGC should take urgent action to rectify the situation. It should prioritise pipeline maintenance and rehabilitation to ensure a steady gas supply to the locality. The SSGC has been claiming tohave undertaken projects to enhance gas pressure and supplies. However, there is a clearly a lot more that needs to be done.
