Many Sindh districts experience downpour for a fourth consecutive day

HYDERABAD: The ongoing spell of monsoon rains continued to lash Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, Badin, Shaheed Benazirabad, Sanghar, Naushahro Feroze, Umerkot, Tharparkar and some other districts of the interior of Sindh on Wednesday night and Thursday.

A heavy spell of rainfall pounded Hyderabad district for a fourth consecutive day, causing flooding on roads and in streets, besides paralysing civic life.

Rainwater accumulated in Latifabad Unit No. 2 and entered homes in low-lying areas. Electricity supply also remained affected.

The heavy spell started on Thursday evening and continued for many hours.

Many areas of Hyderabad city remained without electricity. Residents of Tilak Incline took to the street to protest four days of power outage. They put up obstacles on a main road to demand restoration of power supply.

The district administration recorded 70mm rainfall in Latifabad, 63mm in Hyderabad city and 49mm in rural talukas overthelast24hours.

The Met office said that it recorded 67mm rainfall at its airport office, 54mm incity and 65mm in Tandojam during the period.

Intermittent spells of rain continued to lash Mirpurkhas, Sanghar, Badin, Tharparkar and Umerkot districts on Thursday for a third consecutive day, Thursday. Mirpurkhas and many of its adjoining towns remained without electricity ever since the first heavy spell pounded the area. Civic life in the entire district remained crippled with all business, trade,and commercial activities staying suspended.

People mostly remained indoors and vehicular traffic off the road due to flooding of roads. Rainwater mixed with sewage having accumulated in low-lying areas for several days could not be drained till Thursday evening. More families of the dwellings were seen moving to safe dry places.

The downpour and flooding damagedhundreds of thatched houses and huts in rural areas of the district. Standing crops and seedlings were also destroyed in all rain-hit districts.

Breaches A 15-foot-wide breach occurred in the Chandan minor of Naseer Canal near Jhuddo town due to intense pressure of flows. The deluge swept away thatched houses in dozens of villages.

It started raining in Badin district on Wednesday midnight for a fourth consecutive day and continued intermittently till late Thursday evening.

A 30-foot-wide breach occurred in the Ameer Shah drain of Golarchi on Thursday and gushing water caused heavy flooding in several villages. The deluge inundated roads, cutting off land communication between villages and towns.

A number of families living in coastal areas were reported to have been trapped within their marooned villages.

Nawabshah and Naushahro Feroze districts also received more moderate to heavy falls on Thursday, a fourth consecutive day.

Hours-long outages hit most towns and villages amid the rainfall.

Deputy commissioners of Shaheed Benazirabad and Sanghar districts had already announced closure of all government and private educational institutions for Thursday and Friday.
