Residents protest fluctuation, low voltage

KASUR: Residents of Bhasarpura blocked a road and staged a protest against the Lahore Electric Supply Company (Lesco) on Tuesday after home appliances at scores of houses were damaged due to low electricity voltage and fluctuation.
The protesters burnt tyres and shouted slogans against Lesco.
When a transformer in street no 5 in Bhasarpura was burnt on Monday and Lesco personnel were unable to replace it on time, the residents connected power supply to the transformer in street no 4 on Tuesday.
However, the transformer transmitted power with severe fluctuation that damaged home appliances, including air-conditioners, refrigerators and water pumps, at scores of houses.
The situation forced residents to come out on roads and protest against Lesco for its failure to take action.
On an assurance by the local administration, the agitators dispersed peacefully.
ACCIDENT: Seven people, including a policeman and a Lesco employee, died in separate accidents on Tuesday, while at least 14 were injured.
In the first incident, the driver of a milk van lost control over the vehicle due to speeding and ran over traffic policemen at a picket who were checking papers of a vehicle on Deepalpur Road near Noorpur canal.
Earlier, the van had hit a donkey cart that turned over.
Constable Muhammad Kashif and Liaquat Ali, whose vehicle papers were being checked, died on the spot. Constable Masoom Ali and donkey cart owner Muhammad Azam wereinjured and rushed to the DHQ Hospital.
The van driver managed to escape. Police took the van into custody and started looking into the matter.
A head-on collision between a van and a tractor-trolley took lives of two persons and injured at least 10 on Tuesday at Chunian-Changa Manga Road near Naranal.
Passengers, including Lesco employee Nadeem and Khalid Shah, died on the spot while at least 10, including Iqbal, Zafar, Anwar, Khadim, Altaf and Shabir, were injured and hospitalised. Police were looking into the matter.
In another accident, Muhammad Saleem of Sattoki village was crushed to death when a van coming from the opposite direction hit a motorcycle on Kasur-Raiwind road near Nalka stop.
A motorcyclist, Shahzad, was killed and another, Allah Rakha, injured in a head-on collision between their motorcycles at Allahabad bypass. The injured was taken to hospital.
An elderly woman was crushed to death when a speeding motorcycle hit her on Deepalpur Road near Dollaywala village on Tuesday.
Bilgees Bibi was crossing the road when a motorcyclist hit her. She died on the spot. Police were investigating.
MURDER: A man was stabbed to death following an argument near Darbar Baba Ilam Din.
Irfan while chewing betel leaf accidently spat on a passerby, Muhammad Ashiq, which led to an exchange of harsh words.
Later, Irfan stabbed Ashiq to death and managed to escape.
Police registered a case and started looking into the matter.
