Teachers protest EDO`s enrolment demands

TOBA TEK SINGH: Scores of secondary schools` teachers staged protest demonstrations on Friday demanding transfer of District Education Of ficer Amin Bhatti.

Spokesperson for the Punjab Teachers Union Ramzan Gujjar told reporters the DEO (secondary) had been calling headmasters and teachers to his office in the last few days after school hours to press them to get at least 10pc more students admitted to their schools.

He said the DEO not only insulted them but also kept them waiting for hours in his of fice.

He said as a result a number of senior teachers were facing depression. He said that on Thursday Gojra Government MC High School teachers Iftikhar Shah and Bashir Ahmadwere returning to Gojra on their motorcycles after visiting the DEO office when they were hit near Noorpur railway station by a car.

They were being treated in Faisalabad`s Allied Hospital.

He said they were now on strike on Friday against undue calls by the DEO(S) all over the district.

He said talks were held between PTU office bearers and District Education Authority CEO Riaz Qadeer who assured them that their demand would be accepted within a week over which teachers ended their strike but the Gojra MC school teachers would continue wearing black armbands during duty.

DEO Amin Bhatti said both injured teachers had been shifted home from hospital. He said he had called teachers of only those schools to his office whose schools students enrolment was very low.
