EU future

2017-10-30
THE European Union is in the vortex of disintegration. Ironic is the fact that its fundamental agenda service to humanity and European unity is in the ripples of criticism by its own members.

Indeed, support for war-torn masses and giving shelter to them have caused the EU havoc of Brexit and nationalism.

Additionally, the recently-held polls in dif ferent parts of Europe have shown that Europeans are divided on the lines of xenophobia and Islamophobia. Hence, from France to Austria fear of liberal democracy has been rising. Heartwrenching is that only six out of 27 EU members have liberal democratic governance system.

Moreover, the EU`s all-weather-friend, the United States, has shown reluctance in resetting the crisis in the European Union.

Contrarily, Trump`s win has encouraged the European far-right parties to keep pace of protectionism high.

Therefore, to revitalise unity and democratic norms, leaders of the freeworld Angela Markel and Emanuel Macron have to play their role.

Constructive mechanism is the need of the hour for nipping the wave of protectionism into its bud.
