QWP flays Imran for supporting Kalabagh dam

Bureau Report 2013-12-30
PESHAWAR: Qaumi Watan Party has strongly reacted to the statement of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan about construction of Kalabagh Dam and said the QWP will not allow construction of the controversial dam as it was `against the interests of Pakhtuns` In a statement issued here on Sunday, QWP chief Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao said that his party would resist any move regarding construction of the dam. `We will renderall kinds of sacrifices for protecting the rights of Pakhtuns,` he added.

Mr Sherpao said that the provincial assembly had already adopted resolutions against the dam and that the PTI leader was playing with the sentiments of the people of the province. Similarly, he said Sindh and Balochistan assemblies had also approved resolutions against Kalabagh dam. `And in such a situation Imran is working against the interests of his voters,` he said.

`On one hand Imran is claiming to serve the Pakhtuns but on the other he advocates for constructionof the controversial dam which is tantamount to total destruction of Pakhtuns.

After feeling that his government is unable to run governance, Imran has resorted to such statements to get popularity in Punjab province, said the QWP chief.

The blockade of Nato supply to Afghanistan, said Mr Sherpao, was a mere drama aimed at damaging the economic condition of Pakhtuns and bringing a bad name to the province at the international level.

Mr Sherpao said that in the prevailing situation the provincial gov-ernment was bound to pave way for harmony, understanding and unity among people to overcome the menace of terrorism.

`Pursuing controversial issues can cause hatred among people of different areas,` he said.

Calling for taking up reasonable plans like Diamer-Bhasha Dam, Mr Sherpao said that Kalabagh dam was like a dead horse which needed to be buried forever.

He said QWP would raise forceful voice for rights of Pakhtuns and no one would be allowed to initiate work on controversial project.
