LAHORE: Odds-on favourite darkbay filly Purnoor earned the distinction of becoming a champion fouryear-old filly on Sunday when she won the 1000 Guineas Of Pakistan, a classic term-race run over 1600 metres, during the Lahore Winter Meeting here at the Racecourse.

The daughter of US sire Western Choice, Purnoor, guided by jockey Tahir Abbas took a flying start and led the eleven-runner field all the way home to win by two-and-a half lengths from filly Jamal Din Wali ridden by Aftab Choudhry.

Purnoor`s victory enabled Tahir to complete a hat-trick of triumphs in the classic event.

Chestnut filly Hash Tag finished third three lengths back with bay fillyTaksim Choice fourth.

Though Tahir won the classic, his riding was not flawless. When he was yet to be challenged in the home stretch by Af tab Chaudhry he deliberately let her mount swerve outside in his bid to keep up the front-running advantage which slightly disturbed the running of Jamal Din Wali, when she was struggling to challenge the winner.

Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud, the big-hearted owner of Jamal Din Wali, did not allow his trainer Shahid Rehman to lodge an objection but when the `All Right` cone went up Shahid reported the matter to LRC administrators Hafeez Akhtar Randhawa and Syed Tasvir Hussain.

They saw the race video and stood down Tahir for one month after finding him guilty of intentional bad riding which obstructed Jamal Din Wall. The Anarkali Cup, the main supporting event which is a term-race for three-year-old fillies run over 1200 metres, was won by chestnut filly Nostalgia in a smashing performancewinning by a distance from high-pedigreed filly, Borte who nosed out bay filly Heart to third position while at heels bay filly G. One completed the frame.Trained by M. Afzal, the winner is owned by Syed Atif Ashfaq Shah, who maintains a string of highly bred race horses.

The Khyber Cup, the second sup-porting event gone over 1200 metres, was claimed by bay colt Pakistani Star who came from far behind to beat front-running chestnut colt Mirza One.

A memorial cup race, named after a former steward and leading horse owner, Rafiq A. Mullick was won by bay colt Raksh.

Former LRC chairman Makhdum Syed Ahmad Mahmud gave a Rs20,000 cash award to apprentice Nafeel Aamir, who won his career`s first race on hay colt Chhota Pathan in the day`s opening race.

Nafeel was trained by former champion jockey Waheed Akhtar who also coached the only female rider Alishba Mohsin, who won her career`s first race on Tuesday.

Both the riders are training at the Lahore Race Club`s riding school along with a dozen other apprentices.
