Striped hyena rescued from mob in ex-Fata

PESHAWAR: Veterinarians are treating a wounded striped hyena at Peshawar Zoo.

The dog-like mammal was rescued by the of ficials of the wildlife department and district administration from a mob in Darazinda, a remote area of the erstwhile Fata on Friday evening.

`The condition of the animal is stable and it will fully recover very soon,` zoo director Iftikhar Zaman told Dawn here on Saturday.

The female hyena was shifted from Dera Ismail Khan to the zoo early morning, where veterinarians are treating it.

This is the second wild animal, which was rescued by the officials of the wildlife department during the last one month and brought to the zoo.

Earlier, an African lion was rescued from a private compound in Kohat district. It has beenkeptatthezoo.

The residents have captured striped hyena with the help of hunting dogs in Khoi Pevar, a secluded valley on the border of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan on Friday.

A group of people wielding sticks had flushed out the animal from its din with the help of hunting dogs and were trying to tie it up.District forest officer (wildlife) Khan Maluk said a zoologist from the area, Jehanzeb, had provided information about capture and torture of the wild animal by villagers in Khoi Pevar area.

He said the people had tied up the animal and was bringing it to their village, where they put it in front of dogs the next day.

The official said the residents organised a fare in the village and unleashed dogs to bite the hyena.

`The people enjoy when hunting dogs bite the animal, he said.

Mr Maluk said the wildlife department`s officials and police rushed to the area and rescued the wounded animal from the mob.He said the injured hyena would be freed in the forest area after recovery.

The official said legal action would be taken against culprits with the help of local elders.

He said the wildlife law had been extended to the area after the merger of Fata with the province.

Of ficials said the striped hyenawas found in the foothills of Suleman Range including Tank and adjacent areas of Balochistan.

They said population of the species had shrunk in KP due to the destruction of habitats and trapping.
