KARACHI: The Association of Electronic Media Editors and News Directors (Aemend) has expressed concerns over `undeclared censorship`, the disappearance of journalists and unwarranted interference by government and state institutions in the working of media.
The association held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss challenges faced by the media.
A press release issued after the meeting stated that members deplored the censorship `imposed by the government and other state institutions`.The meeting also called for journalists to not become politicised as it called out certain journalists, anchorpersons and media workers both on social media and on ground whose conduct `cannot be condoned as journalism`.
However, the enforced disappearance of any citizen, either a political worker or a journalist, cannot be supported nor can one remain silent initsface, itnoted.
It also condemned the `disappearance` of journalists and said Imran RiazKhan and other journalists should be prosecuted if they have committed a crime. The meeting urged Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to take notice of the journalists` disappearance.
A committee of stakeholders with representatives from the CPNE, PFUJ, PBA and APNS will be formed to inform the prime minister and other political leaders about these concerns.
`[Aemend] has also decided to write to the Prime Minister, political party leaders, Pemra chairman, the federal government, ISPR and human rights and international journalists organisations to apprise them of the situation in detail.
