Constitution clear on separation of powers: speakers

LAHORE: The Pakistan Study Centre (PSC) at the Punjab University organised a seminar titled `Golden Jubilee of Pakistan`s 1973 Constitution: Salient Features and its Relevance to Current Issues`.
The event saw the presence of former PU dean and chairman of the Department of History Prof Dr Muhammad Iqbal Chawla, PSC Director Prof Dr Naumana Kiran, Associate Professor Dr Amjad Abbas Magsi, faculty members, and students from various departments.
Dr Chawla highlighted that Pakistan is a parliamentary federation, and its constitution encompasses Islamic provisions, fundamental rights, and civil liberties. He emphasised that the constitution guaran-tees fundamental rights to all Pakistani citizens, including the rights to life, liberty, equality before the law and freedom of speech.
Dr Chawla also discussed the clear separation of powers among the executive, legislative and judicial branches, while acknowledging instances where the judiciary has exerted its authority with the support of the establishment. He emphasised the importance of the Constitution in promoting the autonomy of federating units and safeguarding their rights.
He stressed the need for a balanced distribution of powers between the central and provincial governments.
Addressing the current challenges faced by Pakistan, Dr Chawla expressed that the judiciary had been a beacon of hope in finding solutions tothese issues.
Dr Kiran underscored the relevance of the seminar`s topic to contemporary Pakistan. She emphasised the significance of the constitution in ensuring the functioning of a stable state.
In another development, Punjab University Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Khalid Mahmood chaired the first meeting of the PU Journals Steering Committee at Al-Raazi Hall. The meeting was attended by Director ORIC / Chairman of the committee Prof Dr Shakil Ahmed, Secretary Dr Muhammad Rafiq, and others.
Dr Khalid Mahmood highlighted the importance of research journals in the university`s publication portfolio and expressed his hopes that the committee would address the challenges faced by journal editors.
He emphasized the committee`srole in enhancing the university`s research and publication portfolio. Currently, Punjab University publishes 43 journals in various academic disciplines.
The committee, under the guidance of the ORIC director, aims to strengthen these journals by addressing related issues through policy suggestions, technological interventions, and training programmes.
RESULTS: The Punjab University Examinations Department announced the results of various supplementary examinations, including MA Arabic, History Part-I, MSc Applied Psychology, Geography, Sports Science & Physical Education, Statistics Part-I, MA Mass Communication, Persian Part-II, MA Punjabi, Kashmiriyat Part-I & II, and MSc Part-I & II Tourism & Hospitality Management for the year 2022.
