No threat of flood to Sindh

KARACHI: Corps Commander Lieutenant General Naveed Mukhtar on Thursday called on Sindh Chief Minister Syed Qaim Ali Shah at CM House where they expressed their satisfaction over the flood situation in Sindh.

It emerged from their meeting that there is no threat of flood to Sindh at the moment, as the situation is satisfactory and the government is monitoring the flood situation round the clock.

The chief minister praised the role of the army for extending help to the irrigation department and civil administration for strengthening the embankments and facilitating them in rescue operation of transporting the people from the katcha areas to safer places.

The corps commander assured the chief minister of extending more help if needed to cope with any eventuality due to flood or rain-related situation. `The Sindh government is closely monitoring the situation and efforts have been made to make the sensitive embankments stronger for which concrete shovel and required machinery has already been arranged at the sensitive sites,` he said.

In a statement issued later to the media, Senior Provincial Irrigation and Information Minister Nisar Ahmad Khuhro said: `There is no flood-like situation and everything is under control.

Keeping in view the preventive measures and arrangements made at the sensitive sites, he expressed the hope that no untoward situation would occur.

Presently, 524,000 cusecs of water is passing through the Guddu Barrage, which may increase over the next couple of days. It is expected that 600,000 to 700,000 cusecs water would pass through this barrage.

The irrigation minister said the Provincial Disaster Management Authority and the relief department also made necessary arrangements for the safe evacuation of the people from katcha areas along with their belongings and herds.

At all the 46 sensitive embankments, round-theclock vigilance was being ensured while overall situation was also being monitored, the minister said.

No complaint about any negligence had been received so far, he said. However, he made it clear that strict action would be taken against the persons found negligent to their duty, and that no complaint would be ignored.

In addition, he said, special veterinary camps have also been set up. Referring to the Kalabagh Dam issue being highlighted by Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan, Mr Khuhro said that those having a strong desire to create confrontation among the provinces should stop demanding the construction of the controversial Kalabagh Dam.
