‘Development work at Parliament Lodges marred by corruption’

ISLAMABAD: A subcommittee of the Senate Standing Committee on House and Library on Monday expressed displeasure over the poor performance of the Capital Development Authority (CDA) in Parliament Lodges and said there are reports of corruption in the tenders for development works in the lodges The subcommittee met in Parliament House, with Senator Kalsoom Parveen in the chair.
The committee said CDA’s performance has been poor while handling the Parliament Lodges development works and that there are reports the civic agency’s officials are involved in corruption while awarding tenders.
Senator Azam Swati, who attended the meeting on special invitation, said in the next meeting, he will come with documents to show the irregularities and corruption in the tenders for development works.
Senator Samina Saeed said the fruit and vegetable shop in the lodges sells sub-standard and even rotten items while the standard of food in the cafeteria is also not up to the mark.
Her views were seconded by the convenor of the committee. It was decided that both agenda items will be taken up in the next meeting.
During the meeting, CDA officials through a working paper revealed that following a directive of a meeting of the committee on house and library in 1999, it was decided that the rent for all shops will be Rs2,000 plus utility charges per month. The rent for the two tuck shops was fixed at Rs500 each plus utility charges per month.—A Reporter
