IT seems those who are responsible for facilitating the public are good at only causing mental and physical agony to the latter. One good example of this is the placement of cats` eyes in the middle of the roads. Nowhere in the world cats` eyes are placed across the roads and used as speed breakers.
The roads in Peshawar cantonment area have literally been made impassable by these so-called speed breakers. Mall Road, from the airport to the cantonment area, has cats` eyes as speed breakers literally after every 20-30 metres. The same is the case of the road from St.
Mary`s School to a hotel where further monstrous speed breakers have recently been installed immediately af ter traffic lights, causing traffic jams at the crossing during peak hours.
There is no scientific evidence to suggest that these things work. No evidence has been made public about any increase in accidents on these roads prior to the placement of these horrible structures across the roads.
Besides severely damaging the tyres and shock absorbers of the passing vehicles, there is a massive wastage of fuel as the vehicles literally drive in the first gear because of theseiron bricksinstalledin the name of cats` eyes.
Not only this causes severe pollution in the cantonment areas, as evident from smog in winters, but also leads to significant loss of foreign exchange by way of higher fuel consumption. These speed-breakers are poorly marked and can lead to fatal accidents.
They are not placed anywhere else in Peshawar, including Hayatabad. What justification or scientific evidence the local cantonment board has for destroying the roads? The relevant authorities need to order immediate removal of these horrible structures from the roads.
