Ulema support anti-polio drive

LAHORE: Representatives of as many as 28 religious parties led by Pakistan Ulema Council have endorsed the declaration that termed administering anti-polio drops to children essential for their health.

They also decided to meet Law Minister Rana Sanaullah on Wednesday (tomorrow) in order to send the final draft (code of conduct) for curbing sectarian violence.

`We are happy today that ulema from all schools of thought have endorsed our decision of terming the polio campaign beneficial for children. And we have also decided to meet Rana Sanaullah in order to discuss the draft on the elimination of sectarian violence,` PUC Chairman Hafiz Tahir Mehmood Asharfi told Dawn on Monday.

He said after discussing the draft, the government would convert it into a bill and table it in the Punjab Assembly session for approval.

He said the parties at a meeting in Faisalabad on Monday also agreed to observe Rabiulawal amid peace. `In this regard we will hold 14 conferences in various Punjab cities by involving all religious parties,` he added.
