ISLAMABAD: With a special court set to indict former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf for high treason on Wednesday, the military dictator seems busy in interacting with the electronic media, especially foreign news organisations, possibly to gain sympathy from international community.
On Monday, Gen Musharraf gave an interview to a foreign media network in which he said he had left the issue of his trial to the incumbent chief of army staff. It was up to Gen Raheel Sharif to decide what support he should receive from the army in the case,he added.
Talking to BBC at his Chak Shahzad farmhouse, the former military ruler claimed that not only the army butthe common people were also with him because as president he took steps to reduce poverty and enable an ordinary man to upgrade his lifestyle.
Gen Musharraf claimed that the army was very concerned about what was happening to him. He said he had spent days and nights with soldiers and understood their feelings well.
In an interview with AFP on Sunday Gen Musharraf had claimed that he had the army`s support.
He alleged that the treason case was politically motivated in which he had been implicated unnecessarily. He expressed hope of getting justice from the courts.
However, his lawyers think otherwise. During a press conference in Islamabad Gen Musharraf`s counsel Barrister Mohammad Ali Saif levelled serious allegations at judges of the special court and said they were `blased` Gen Musharraf has himself challenged the appointment of judges in the Islamabad High Court, but his petition was not entertained by IHC`s Justice Riaz Ahmed Khan.
