Nato ends mission

2014-12-31
NATO has ended its 13-year long combat mission in Afghanistan and handed over major security installation and detention facilities to the Afghan forces.

President Barack Obama in a speech has described the Nato mission as a success, and according to him, the world has become a more secure place.

On the other hand, new reports state that militants attack this year alone, have increased by 60pc.

According to the UN, civilian casualties this year are higher and more than 4,000 Afghan security personnel lost their lives.

Political uncertainty in the country is also high.

The new Ashraf Ghani government has still not been able to form a cabinet after serious differences with arch political rival Abdullah Abdullah.

After more than a decade of continuous war, more than one trillion dollars in war expenditure and the loss of 8,000 US, Nato and Afghan soldiers in the fighting, Afghanistan is facing serious security and economic challenges after Nato`s exit and it seems improbable that Mr Ashraf Ghani`s government can run the country.
