Body formed to review NAB laws

ISLAMABAD: The National Assembly Standing Committee on Law and Justice formed on Thursday a subcommittee to examine the National Accountability Ordinance, 1999, and review the bills seeking amendments to the law.

The five-member subcommittee to be headed by Syed Naveed Qamar of the opposition PPP is required to submit its recommendations and propose amendments to the laws related to the working of NAB within 60 days.

Other members of the subcommittee are Raza Hayat Harraj of the ruling PML-N, Dr Arif Alvi of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), S.A Iqbal Qadri of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement and Maulana Mohammad Khan Sherani of Jamiat Ulema-iIslam-Fazl.

The meeting of the standing committee headed by Mahmood Bashir Virk of the PML-N had been called to consider six `chronological pending bills`four of them seeking amendments to vari-ous sections of the NAB Ordinance, 1999.

Besides, the committee took up a constitution amendment bill, also moved by Mr Harraj, seeking insertion of a sub-article 63-B into the Constitution suggesting disqualification of a person from service in Pakistan, including members of the armed forces, judiciary and members of legislatures, if he maintains a foreign bank account, holds an office of profit or interest in any foreign company or organisation or carries out business or commercial activity in any foreign country whether in his own name or in the name of his spouse, children and dependents.

On the request of Law Minister Zahid Hamid, the mover agreed to the proposal that the bill should be referred to the Parliamentary Committee on Electoral Reforms.Staff Reporter
