Two doctors refuse to appear before DC’s probe body on ‘neglected’ patient’s death

HYDERABAD: The inquiry committee formed by Deputy Commissioner Zain U1 Abiden Memon on a labourer’s death in Liaquat University Hospital due to alleged delay in providing proper medical treatment recorded statements of his heirs and all LUH doctors and employees concerned.

However, two doctors stayed away on the ground that they ‘fall in the administrative domain ofthe vice chancellor of Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences (LUMHS), and not Liaquat University Hospital(LUH).

The patient, Ayub Qureshi, 35, was a mason and was taken to the LUH on July 29 after a piece of iron rod pierced throughtheupperpartof his chest from back side upon falling on ground from a wall.

He died from profuse bleeding a few hours after being sent to the operating theatre of LUH SurgicalUnit-I. Anuproar over the social media over the alleged neglect on the part of medicos prompted the LUMHS and DC to institute their respective inquiries.

The DC committee had called all those concerned to record their statements but Professor Ambreen Munir, a BS-21 facultymember who heads the Surgical Unit-I and her Assistant Professor Dr Sheeraz did not appear before the committee.

They argued that they fell in the administrative domain of LUMHS and not LUH.

The DC was quoted as saying that the inquiry committee would incorporate this in its report which would be submitted to the health secretary. He said that he had also conveyed this to the Hyderabad commissioner.

‘There is a view that thoracic surgeon Dr Khalil got scared that if he tried to remove the pierced rod, it may cause his death for which he might face his relatives’ wrath, said a source close to inquiry team.

The committee is yet to finalise its findings.
