SRINAGAR: Indian security forces on Tuesday killed three Kashmiris who they blamed had stormed a paramilitary base near the main airport in India-held Kashmir.

Police claimed that an hour-long gun battle between the alleged attackers and security personnel also left a soldier dead.

Three paramilitary troopers and apolice ofhcer were injured when the alleged attackers hurled grenades and fired from automatic weapons at the Border Security Force (BSF) base next to the highsecurity Srinagar airport before dawn, said directorgeneral of police S.P. Vaid.

Flights at the airport, which shares a compound wall with the base, resumed after being suspended briefly with at least one flight from New Delhi cancelled, authorities said.

Kashmir`s inspector-general of police, Muneer Ahmed Khan, blamed Jaishi-Mohammed for the attack but denied some media reports that the fortified airport was the target. -AFP
