Off-duty cop shoots undertrial dead

PESHAWAR: An off-duty policeman on Tuesday afternoon shot dead an undertrial on the premises of the heavily-guarded judicial complex here over an old enmity.

The incident took place on the premises of the Peshawar Judicial Complex located on the Khyber Road, where several military and government installations are situated.

An East Cantonment police official told Dawn the incident took place at around 1pm on the ground floor of the building. Police identified the attacker as Arshad Ali, resident of Khazana area, while the slain was named Wasifullah of Nahqi locality of the same area.

The official said the attacker opened fire on him with a pistol near the court of additional sessions judge, where the slain had come to attend a hearing. He said it was an incident of personal enmity as the slain was behind bars on murder charges. The attacker was nabbed following the incident along with the gun.

SSP operations Peshawar Sajjad Khan told reporters on the court premises the attacker was a policeman and that it was result of an old enmity. He said that it was not clear how the attacker, who was in civvies managed to get inside the judicial complex with a weapon. He said that the complex had about 100-personnel strong security. The police officer said they were investigating the incident and if those found of negligence in duty would be dealt with strictly.

A source told Dawn that there was a single entry and exit point to the judicial complex and people were checked at least at three places before entering the premises.Bureau Report
