MOHMAND: Heavy rain, coupled with strong winds, hit several parts of the Mohmand tribal district on Friday, causing flooding and landslides.
In Ekkaghund tehsil, a flash flood swept through Agrab Dag Khwar stream after heavy rainfall, leaving labourers and schoolchildren stranded.
Residents rescued those trapped on the route, using a tractor-trolley.
They said flooding at Agrab Dag Khwar had become a recurring problem during heavy rains, frequently disrupting movement.
The residents called for the construction of a bridge over the stream to ensure safe passage for residents, labourers and schoolchildren.
Meanwhile, officials visited the Kozo Kask area of Khwezai tehsil along with the additional assistant commissioner of Baizai to assess the situation following the flooding.
Heavy rainfall in Khwezai and Baizai caused the water level in Kozo Kask Khwar stream to rise, affecting traffic and movement between the two areas.
Residents said a bridge was washed away by the flash flood.
They said rainwater from both tehsils converged at the site, often disrupting traffic and, during heavy rainfall, cutting off the route. Thelink road is used mainly by local residents, while heavy vehicles generally use the main road, to the misery of commuters.
People stranded by the flood were safely transported across the affected stretch in an official vehicle. The Baizai tehsildar and additional assistant commissioner monitored the situation.
Landslides were reported on the main Peshawar-Bajaur Road in the Karapa area, disrupting traffic and causing difficulties for motorists and passengers.
A district administration official said road clearance operations were under way at several locations in upper parts of Mohmand, with the tehsil municipal administration deploying machinery to remove debris and restore traffic.
He said there were no casualties but damage to mud houses was reported in two tehsils.
The official said an assessment of the losses was under way.
He said the administration was monitoring the road clearance operation at Karapa.
The official said machinery had been deployed and the landslide debris would be removed shortly, allowing traffic to resume normally.
He said the administration and relevant departments were monitoring the situation and taking measures to minimise disruption and ensure the safety of residents and commuters.
