PRACTICAL SKILLS: Every year, I watch friends and seniors in Islamabad graduate with big hopes only to spend months sending CVs and getting no response. The problem is that they lack practical skills. What they learn in class is not what the companies actually need.

Universities should move beyond theory and bring in internships and real projects as part of academic degrees. The government and the corporate sector should offer more paid internships and training programmes. Most importantly, students need better career counselling early so that they may choose their fields with due prudence. Our youth needs the right tools and proper guidance. If we do not act now, we will keep losing our talent.

Syeda Naginat us Shams Islamabad EDUCATING MOTORCYCLISTS: Many motorcycle riders tend to ignore basic safety rules, such as wearing helmets.

They ride in the middle of the road or move unpredictably between lanes, disrupting the flow of traffic. Equally concerning is the practice of allowing underage children to ride motorcycles and electric bikes on the roads without the necessary skills, training or legal eligibility. The authorities should launch a nationwide motorcycle road-safety awareness campaign, covering helmet use, lane discipline, speed control, safe overtaking, visibility, and the legal restrictions concerning underage riders.

Social media, television, radio and newspapers can play an important role in delivering these public-service messages.

Syed Shujaat Ali Shah Islamabad FLOODING IN RAWALPINDI: The recent rainfall has exposed questionable water drainage practices and irresponsible behaviour of the authorities. Traders in Raja Bazaar witnessed huge economic losses due to flooding. Business was seriously disrupted owing to water-filled streets. Rain should have been a blessing, but it became a curse for the local residents.

To tackle this situation, an effective water drainage mechanism is indispensable. In addition, modern techniques are required to preserve rainwater for later usage.
