Inquiry ordered into students’ protest at nursing college

PESHAWAR: The provincial government on Monday ordered an inquiry into the brief detention of 11 students of the Postgraduate College of Nursing, Hayatabad, for locking the institute’s premises.

The students were detained after they locked the college’s premises, Director General Provincial Services Academy, Dr Saleem, said, adding that the college principal called the police to prevent violence.

He said that there was no hostel for boys on the premises and students were accommodated temporarily in a residential area, adding that students were asked to vacate the area.

‘The students should have talked to the administration, but they opted for protest on the premises, forcing the college’s management to call the police to prevent any violence,’ he told Dawn, adding that the students blocked the road near Phase-3.

He said the road was reopened after negotiations and the arrested students were released. He also said that an inquiry committee led by the special secretary health was formed to probe the issue.

Meanwhile, students claimed that hostels designated for boys had allegedly been allocated to the college’s faculty, depriving them of accommodation facilities.

They said that they had been holding a peaceful protest, but instead of holding negotiations to resolve the issue, the administration called the police and 11 students, including females, were arrested.
