Sharjeel says 40 bus stops to be set up for PBS in city

KARACHI: The Sindh government has decided to set up 40 stops for the Peoples Bus Service (PBS) across the city within two months.
The provincial transport department has also decided to make scientific vehicle fitness checks mandatory across the province.
The decisions were made on Saturday at a meeting chaired by Senior Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon,withSecretaryof Transport Asad Zamin, Project Director of Peoples Bus Service Sohaib Shafique, and others in attendance.
`The 40 bus stops will be set upby January2025.The Sindhgovernment aims to modernise and align its transport system with global standards,` the statement quoted the minister as saying.
`The state-of-the-art bus stops of the Peoples Bus Service are essential for modern, efficient, and sustainable mobility. The modern bus stops will provide excellent seating and protection from weather for passengers,` he added.
The meeting was informed that the work had been completed on two of the bus stops, and the remaining ones will also be completed as soon as possible.
During the meeting, the minister also discussed proposals to ensurevehicle fitness, calling it a cornerstone for road safety and environmental protection. `Regular fitness checks are essential to prevent accidents and stop harmful emissions, said Mr Memon.
`Fitness checks reduce carbon footprints and ensure public safety.
The transport department should take necessary and strict actions to ensure vehicle fitness checks. An effective system for vehicle fitness should also be implemented at the time of vehicle registration, transfer of registration, and tax payments. Strict action will be taken against vehicles that do not comply with fitness regulations,` added the minister.
