2023-04-09
JERUSALEM: The Arab `Liberation Army` today [April 8] called on Jews in the besieged settlement of Mishmar Hayemek, in northern Palestine, to surrender or face destruction in a full-scale attack. The terms, dictated by the Arab Field Commander Fawzi Bey Kaukji, offered the Jews the choice of evacuation or occupation by an Arab garrison if they surrendered. The garrison, if accepted, would protect Jewish lives and property, an Arab headquarters communique said.

British troops yesterday evacuated 300 women and children from the settlement, which has suffered shelling [by] the Arab Army. Jerusalem, already faced with serious food shortages in the Jewish districts owing to the Arab blockade, is now threatened with a water shortage. The Chairman of the Municipal Commission, Mr. R.M. Graves, today announced that the water supply from the main pumping station at Ras el Ain, 10 miles north of Lydda, had been interrupted and no water was available from the Ain Farah spring owing to the impossibility of obtainingdieseloilforthepumps. Jerusalem`s 168,000 people have been warned to use their taps and cisterns sparingly. News agencies
