Residents decry construction of rescue centre on ‘park land’

ISLAMABAD: Residents of Sector I-9 alleged on Tuesday that the Capital Development Authority (CDA) intends to construct a Rescue 1122 centre on ‘park land’.

Residents said that the 1122 centre is being built in I-9 Markaz and, for this project, CDA has demarcated a portion of the park’s land as well.

However, CDA officials said that the land where the 1122 centre is going to be built is already earmarked and planned for 1122 services and has remained abandoned for a long time.

CDA says that, adjacent to this plot, there is a park. But people have been using the land earmarked for 1122 services as well, considering it part of the park.

‘In fact, we are not encroaching on the park; rather, our plot has been in public use because it was lying abandoned, and we never stopped people from using it as a park,’ said a CDA officer.

Recently, the contractor started work, which triggered unrest among citizens.

A number of residents of I-9, led by former Chairman of Union Council I-9, Sardar Mahtab, rushed to the site and requested CDA ‘not to deprive citizens of the park facility.’ They said they will protect park land come what may. Staff Reporter
